About The University:
The University of Strathclyde received its charter in 1964. But it was founded in 1796, as Anderson’s Institute, and has been ‘ a place of useful learning’ ever since. Many of its courses are recognised by professional bodies.

The University has 2 campuses – John Anderson in the city centre and Jordanhill in the west end.

It runs credit based, flexible, modular courses through 5 Faculties
      • The Business School - including the Scottish Hotel School

      • Education – at the Jordanhill campus

      • Engineering – including courses with chartered engineer status

      • Law, Arts and Social Sciences – almost 100 possible subject combinations in the BA degree

      • Science – including many applied courses with industrial placements
It is one of the largest universities in Scotland, with
      • over 15,000 undergraduates

      • 7,000 postgraduates

      • students from over 100 countries
The UK Quality Assessment Agency rated its teaching standards highly.

You could spend part of your undergraduate course abroad through
      • the European schemes, Erasmus and Socrates

      • exchange with universities in USA, Canada, Singapore, Japan, New Zealand and Australia
Strathclyde graduates are much sought after in industry, commerce and the public sector.

Support for learning
The Centre for Academic Practice helps with study skills, through advice, workshops and self-learning resources.
Most courses have online teaching and learning materials.
The Disability Service arranges any necessary support. Assistive Technology Advisers help identify suitable equipment, for instance for dyslexia or partial sight. John Anderson campus is steep and students with mobility problems are advised to visit - contact the Service beforehand.

Child care
The nursery at John Anderson campus is for children aged 6 weeks to 5 years. There is no nursery at Jordanhill.

Mature entrants
There are concessions for mature entrants, but you must have evidence of recent study. There is a mature entry test, consisting of an essay and interview for the Faculty of Law, Arts and Social Sciences, and the Business School.

Access courses for adults and pupils
      • the University recognises Scottish Wider Access Programme (SWAP) courses

      • there is an evening Pre-entry Course for the Faculty of Law, Arts and Social Sciences, and the Business School – no formal entry requirements

      • a Summer School in chemistry, maths, physics, IT and study skills can upgrade results slightly below that required, or gained a long time ago

      • the Summer Academy is for 14-15 year olds needing additional support and motivation to get good grades

      • the Greater Opportunities for Access and Learning with Schools (GOALS) encourages applications from schools which do not usually send many pupils to university – university staff visit these schools
Part time study
You can take a degree in arts and social sciences by part time day study, over 6 years.

There is an Open day each September and Information Afternoons for mature entrants each February.
Departmental visits are arranged for applicants, and if you are offered a place, you will be invited to an Information Session.

      • in 2004, 61% students went directly into employment, 17.5% into further study and 11.3% were overseas students returning home

      • this is one of only 2 centres in Scotland running degrees in both Speech and Language Therapy and Pharmacy

      • it has the largest Business, Education and Engineering schools in Scotland
