Support for learning
The Student Learning Service runs courses in Learning Strategies on-line, through workshops or by individual tutorial.
The Disability and Dyslexia Advisers, in the Student Information and Support Service, provide support for students with special needs. There is specialised equipment, including infra-red technology, for those with hearing impairments.
Child care
The Psychology Department runs a playgroup for children aged 2 years 9 months to 5 years. The parent and toddler group is for children from birth to 3 years.
A nearby off-campus Nursery takes children from 6 weeks to 5 years.
Mature entrants
Mature entrants, with various entry qualifications, are welcome. There is a Mature Students Society.
Access courses
The University recognises Scottish Wider Access Programme (SWAP) courses, if you gain grade Bs.
It also runs its own access courses
a part time 1 year course for mature entrants
a 3 month autumn course for young people who just missed the entry requirements – they can then start in February or the next September
a foundation year for overseas students
Advanced entry
Pupils with 3 Advanced Highers (ABB or BBB) including the course subject(s) may gain entry to year 2.
A Higher National Certificate (HNC) normally gives entry to year 1 and a Higher National Diploma (HND) to year 2 of a related course, but HNC or HND in Tourism Management may give entry to year 2 or 3 of a similar degree.
The University has links with some colleges (Edinburgh’s Telford, Falkirk, Clackmannan, Cumbernauld, Lauder, Perth, Stevenson and West Lothian) and an HNC or HND from one of these may give entry to year 2 or 3.
Part time study
You can take a part time degree in most subjects, during the day. Some degrees are available by evening study. You can start in September or February. There are some courses over the summer.
Community courses
The Department of Access and Innovative Continuing Education runs community-based courses, which can lead to a degree.
