About The University:
The University of St Andrews was founded in 1413. It is the oldest university in Scotland and third oldest in the UK.
The University is now a blend of ancient and modern. Its commitment to scholarship is as great as it was 600 years ago.
Some traditions are still important, including the red undergraduate gown.
Courses are taught in 3 Faculties
- Science (including Medical Science)
Courses are modular, so the degree structure is flexible. The BSc Medical Science, which leads to a medical degree at the University of Manchester, is the only course which is not modular.
There are some 6,500 students
- 26%, of 75 nationalities, from Europe or overseas
- 40% of undergraduates are men, 60% women
There are about 650 academic staff
- this was the only university in Scotland rated Excellent or Highly Satisfactory throughout by the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council
- it achieved the best research results in Scotland, all schools being ranked as having international status
It has an excellent employment record
- 97% of graduates are in work, further study or training within 6 months
There are English Language courses for overseas students. The Language Teaching Services Unit runs evening courses which are open to students.

The Disability Team supports students with special needs. Some older buildings are difficult of access. Contact the Special Needs Adviser to arrange a visit before applying.
Child care

Mature entrants
The University encourages mature entrants without traditional qualifications. The Access Centre produces a separate booklet Guide for Mature Students.
Access courses for adults and pupils

- the free Access Summer School is for students who, perhaps through illness or family circumstances, need extra support before starting university
- the Sutton Trust Summer School is for pupils with another year at school, who might not normally consider applying to university
