About The College:
Orkney College courses reflect Orcadian culture, as well as the Islands’ growing importance as a centre of renewable energy. It is an academic partner of the UHI Millennium Institute (UHI).
The College’s main campus, in Kirkwall, is housed in new buildings opened in 2000. The Maritime Studies section is in Stromness. There are learning centres on most of the islands.
There are courses at various levels, including Scottish Vocational Qualifications, National Qualifications, Higher National Certificates (HNC), Higher National Diplomas, degrees and postgraduate awards.
Courses cover the following subject areas
- Business(including Tourism)
- Maritime(Merchant and Fishing)
- Sustainable Development and Environmental Management

Because this College is a UHI partner, you apply through UCAS for courses at HNC and above.
Support for learning
Staff are always ready to support students in their learning.
The Open Learning Centre has wheelchair access and special equipment for disabled students, including computing facilities for those with visual impairments.
Child care
The College does not have a nursery, but may be able to help fund registered child care elsewhere.
Mature entrants
The College welcomes mature students. You may not need the normal entry requirements.
Part time study
The College runs part time and short courses in a wide range of subjects.
The Open Learning Centre is open to people of all ages. It is the hub of a network of Learndirect centres including Westray, Stronsay, Sanday, Eday, Papa Westray, North Ronaldsay, South Ronaldsay, Shapinsay, Flotta, Hoy and Rousay.
