About The University:
The University of Glasgow was founded in 1451. John Logie Baird is amongst its numerous well-known former students.
It is Scotland’s second oldest University and the fourth oldest in the UK. The main building, in the west end of Glasgow,
is a well-known city landmark.
The University has about 100 teaching departments, with a wide range of courses including: arts, divinity, education,
engineering, law, medicine, dentistry, music, sciences, social sciences and veterinary medicine.
It is one of the largest universities in Scotland, with...
- 17,000 full time and 3,000 part time students
- 3,400 researchers
- over 2,000 international students
Teaching and research are of a high standard...
- it was the first major university to have an Enhancement-Led Institutional Review (ELIR – a benchmark introduced in 2003) and
gained the highest rating of 'broad confidence'
- the UK Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education rated research in 27 subjects at 5* (the highest level) or 5
You could spend part of your undergraduate course abroad through...
- the European schemes, Erasmus and Socrates
- a scheme whereby some students can spend a year in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, USA, Canada, Japan, Mexico
or South America
Employment prospects are good
- it is one of 22 UK universities in the on-line vacancy scheme targetGRAD
Support for learning
The Student Support Service has Effective Learning Advisers who organise study skills workshops and also give individual help to
students. Disability Advisers arrange pre-application visits. Some of the old buildings are not easily accessible but efforts are
being made to overcome this problem.
Child care
The Nursery looks after children of students and staff, from 6 weeks to 5 years.
Mature entrants
You must meet the modified entry requirements for over 21s. Mature entrants cannot use school qualifications for entry.
Access courses for adults and pupils:
- the University recognises Scottish Wider Access Programme (SWAP) courses
- the Department of Adult and Continuing Education (DACE) runs part time access courses for adults – details available from DACE
- the Greater Opportunities for Access and Learning with Schools (GOALS) encourages applications from schools which do not usually send many pupils to university – university staff visit these schools
Advanced entry
If you have a Higher National Certificate or Higher National Diploma you can apply for entry, but you will probably have to start
in year 1.
Part time study
You can take a Certificate or Diploma in Higher Education or a degree, by part time day study. Some courses also run in the
evenings. The separate Part Time Degree Prospectus gives details.
