About The College:
Glasgow College of Nautical Studies has an international reputation for nautical and marine engineering education. It also provides a wide range of other courses.
The College has 2 campuses on the south bank of the River Clyde, within walking distance of each other.
Courses lead to qualifications ranging from National Qualifications to Higher National Diplomas (HND), as well as a degree in Nautical Science.
Courses are run through 4 faculties, each divided into schools
- Care and Social Studies (Child Care Education and Health; Media, Drama and Social Sciences; Social and Community Studies)
- Engineering (Telecommunications and Electronic Engineering; Marine and Mechanical Engineering)
- Maritime Studies (Marine Operations; Nautical Studies; Transport Studies)
- Science and Technology (Computing and Mathematics; Business and Management; Sport, Leisure and Beauty Therapy)
There are some 7,000 students, 1,800 of whom are full time.
Support for learning
- Learner Services provides support in study skills – essay and report writing, number work, computing – on a drop-in basis.
- There is extra help for students with special needs. Each student negotiates an individual learning agreement and support plan.
- If English is not your first language and you need additional support with your written or spoken communication skills, we have workshops to help.
- The College has special programmes for people with Asperger’s Syndrome, and emotional and behavioural problems.
Before you start
If you would like to brush up on your skills before you start your course, you can attend workshops to get help with study skills, essay writing, numeracy, IT, English language.
Child care
The Thistle Nursery, on campus, has 40 places and cares for children aged 6 weeks to 5 years.
Accommodation
GCNS has both catered and self catered Halls of Residence situated on the campus.
Students Association
There is a thriving Students Association giving learners opportunities to participate actively in College life. Fund raising and social events are part of a full programme of activities.
Access courses
The College runs an Access course for higher education in Information Technology.
Part time study
Part time courses run both day and evening.
Flexible learning, in computing and other subjects, is available for any individual.
Community courses
Courses are run for local community groups, including those experiencing addiction, homelessness and mental health problems.
Mature entry
Mature applicants are welcome and if you have appropriate experience you may be accepted without the normal entry requirements.

The Merchant Navy Awareness Day held each autumn, brings together prospective students and shipping companies.
