About The College:
Barony College specialises in education and training for the land-based and animal care industries.
It is a small, friendly college, on a 500 acre estate 8 miles north of Dumfries. It has some of the best facilities for land-based courses in the UK, including
- commercial arable and pastoral farms
- an animal care training centre with operating theatre and X-ray facilities
- a commercial fish farm and the Scottish Aquatics Training Centre
- an equine centre with stables and an outdoor arena
- the Scottish Forest Industries Technology Centre
Most courses lead to National Qualifications or Scottish Vocational Qualifications with a small number of Higher National Certificates and Diplomas.
Courses are taught in 8 main areas
- Aquaculture, Fisheries and Aquatics
Over the last 30 years, the College has built a reputation for high quality education. An inspection in 1998 rated 98% of teaching as ‘good’ or ‘very good’.
The College has had students from all over the world, including Africa, Malaysia, America, Greece, Italy, Cyprus, Iceland, Norway and Eastern Europe.
Support for learning
Every student has a course tutor who helps with problems and offers one-to-one support.
The Employment Evaluation unit welcomes students with special needs. It has a unique approach to learning, tailored to individual needs.
Child care
The College does not have a nursery, but may be able to help fund registered child care elsewhere.
Mature entrants
Mature students are welcome. Contact the College to discuss your needs.
Part time study
Some courses are run part time, during the day. There are short courses, in various subjects, including deer farming and food smoking, by arrangement.
The College runs distance learning courses in animal care and aquatics, as well as in veterinary nursing, for students working in veterinary practices.
